From our earliest days in Panama we longed for a weather station to tell us the rainfall and, after a particularly harrowing January, the wind speed and direction. Temperature is pretty stable here year-round, but the other data were of great interest to us. We did have an Oregon Scientific temperature probe that gave us maximum/minimum readings, but it was soon apparent that not much of interest was happening with temperature.

When we decided to go ahead with a complete station, we consulted with Lloyd Cripe of Boquete Weather, and he recommended the WeatherHawk station. After some discussion, we decided to go ahead with his recommendation. Lloyd was a great help to us when setting up and installing the station. He and his worker Miguel are in the images below.

Our weather station was installed on December 13, 2008. Here, from left to right, is the installation process: 1. digging the hole, 2. leveling the pole, 3. installing the station, 4. broadcasting data:

The station began collecting data immediately. We had a shake-down period of a little more than a month in which we tweaked the software and calibrated different parts of the hardware. The data went live on the internet on January 17, 2009.
